Calcium Might be your Bestie!

If you're living with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), you've likely explored every avenue for relief from lifestyle changes to medication. But one of the most underrated tools hiding in plain sight is calcium. That’s right - unsuspecting calcium!

Research has consistently shown that women with PMDD tend to have lower calcium levels and disrupted calcium metabolism during the luteal phase. This matters because calcium plays a direct role in regulating serotonin, the neurotransmitter closely tied to mood. When calcium levels dip, serotonin signaling can become erratic, contributing to the anxiety, irritability, depression, and emotional sensitivity that define PMDD. A landmark study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology found that supplementing with 1,200 mg of calcium carbonate daily reduced PMDD symptoms by nearly 50% compared to placebo — a result that rivals some pharmaceutical interventions.

You can of course find calcium in food sources such as dairy products, fortified plant milks, leafy greens like kale and bok choy, almonds, and canned fish with bones. That said, food alone can be difficult to rely on when PMDD symptoms are at their worst which is where a daily supplement can bridge the gap.

As always, check in with your doctor before starting a new supplement routine, especially if you have a history of kidney stones or are on other medications. But for many people with PMDD, calcium is a simple, low-risk place to start — and the evidence behind it is stronger than you might expect!
