Insulin resistance is a condition in which your body's cells stop responding effectively to insulin. Once it drops, fat tends to migrate from the hips and thighs to the abdomen to create visceral fat. Visceral fat is itself highly inflammatory and one of the strongest drivers of insulin resistance. This is why women who had no metabolic issues in their 30s can suddenly find themselves struggling in their 40s and 50s without changing anything about their diet or lifestyle.

Insulin resistance often sits at the heart of weight loss resistance — the frustrating experience of doing "everything right" and still not losing weight. When insulin levels are chronically elevated, the body is essentially stuck in fat-storage mode. High insulin actively blocks lipolysis, the process by which your body breaks down stored fat for fuel. It also drives hunger and cravings, particularly for carbohydrates, creating a cycle that's incredibly difficult to break through willpower alone. For women in perimenopause and menopause, this isn't a matter of eating less or moving more; it's a hormonal and metabolic issue that requires a targeted approach, including stabilizing blood sugar, managing stress and sleep, and often adjusting macronutrient ratios to reduce the insulin load on the body. Understanding insulin resistance isn't just about preventing diabetes; it's the foundation of understanding why the body changes so dramatically during midlife and what it actually takes to work with your metabolism rather than against it.
